Birmingham Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Philip, stands as a beacon of spiritual grace and architectural beauty at the heart of Birmingham’s bustling city centre. Built-in the early 18th century, this stunning example of English Baroque architecture has been a place of worship, solace, and celebration for over 300 years, attracting visitors from across the world who come to admire its historical significance and vibrant community life.

Designed by renowned architect Thomas Archer, the cathedral was consecrated as a parish church in 1715 and later elevated to cathedral status in 1905. Its sandstone façade and elegant spire have weathered the passage of time, serving as a visual testament to Birmingham’s rich heritage. Inside, the warm glow of the nave is accentuated by remarkable stained-glass windows, which include four masterpieces by the Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones, a native of Birmingham. These spectacular windows bathe the interior in a kaleidoscope of colours, providing a tranquil contrast to the city’s dynamic energy outside.

Beyond its visual splendour, Birmingham Cathedral stands as a hub of cultural and community activities. It offers a diverse range of services, from traditional Anglican worship to contemporary expressions of faith, accommodating the spiritual needs of its diverse congregation. The cathedral also hosts concerts, exhibitions, educational tours, and lectures, fostering a vibrant dialogue between faith and urban life.

Centrally located in Cathedral Square, the Cathedral garden is the largest green space in the city centre with around 22,000 people passing through every day.

Birmingham Cathedral epitomises the harmonious blend of the sacred and the civic, offering not just religious services but also acting as a custodian of city’s heritage. It’s a place where the city’s past is honoured, its present is embraced, and its future is anticipated with hope and community spirit. Visitors to Birmingham are encouraged to step through its venerable doors to experience the tranquility and magnificence that have made the cathedral a cherished landmark.

Birmingham Cathedral is a beautiful and peaceful place right in the heart of the city. The building’s stunning architecture and colourful stained glass windows, especially the ones designed by Edward Burne-Jones, are truly breathtaking. Despite being in the busy city centre, the cathedral offers a calm and reflective atmosphere. The staff and volunteers are very friendly and welcoming, always happy to share the history of the place. The surrounding grounds are well-kept and provide a lovely spot to sit and take in the beauty of the area. A must-visit if you’re exploring Birmingham and appreciate art, history, or simply a moment of quiet.

Designed by the English Baroque architect, Thomas Archer, St Philip's was originally built as a parish church in 1715. It became the cathedral of the newly formed Diocese of Birmingham in 1905. Outside is a memorial to those murdered by the IRA in 1974 in the Birmingham pub bombings. Inside of note when I visited elements of the 2025 Nativity by Melanie Tomlinson (information on website). As well as four beautiful stain glass windows by Edward Burne - Jones (three in the apse around the altar and one in the baptistry. Birmingham Cathedral may not be the largest or the most ornate but it does have a charm of its own and in 1989 HM Queen Eizabeth II granted maundy money.

Birmingham Cathedral is third smallest cathedral in England. English baroque style and Pre-Raphaelite style stained glass windows give a lot of charm and harmony. Very nice staff and choir singing also add a lot of good vibes.

First time doing this but definitely won't be out last!!! Such a great experience - the whole event was so well organised that there was nothing to do except enjoy the music (4 Seasons by a marvellous string quartet - Sekine). Great acoustics in the cathedral and the mood with the candles and smaller audience was perfect. Thank you to all involved - Fever staff, cathedral staff and Sekine.

I find Birmingham city centre to be a great area to explore several historic attractions, the modernised shopping🛍️ Centre and the new tram🚉system. It truly is a fascinating experience for tourists, I was born and raised in birmingham and I have to say it’s been a pleasure to see the decade worth of renovation & transformation It has undergone. You will find the Birmingham- Deritend church displayed in my review post, what a timely piece of art amongst several others. Whether you’re looking for a business 💼or pleasure😇, this is a great city for you consider. There are currently over 160 clothing stores in the Bullring🐂 and over 200 in 🏰Grand central. Not to mention the hundreds upon hundreds of restaurants🍷🍱and bars🍹🍲. If you are not from birmingham then im certain that you will have a fabulous time investigating what this city has to offer as it is limitless and has come along way. There is so much to take part in, i have no doubts that you will ever run out of things to view.
