While on a visit to Birmingham make sure you stop off at it’s top attraction, the Black Country Living Museum is an award-winning open air museum that tells the story of one of the very first industrialised landscapes in Britain. Set across 26 acres, you’ll explore carefully reconstructed shops, houses and industrial areas that represent the Black Country’s story. You’ll learn how steam power, human ingenuity and an increasingly interconnected world transformed this region into a manufacturing powerhouse.

On your day out at Black Country Living Museum, you’ll meet our historic characters who’ll tell you stories of what it was really like to live and work during this revolutionary period of history.

We proudly share why our small region made a big impact on the world and bring Birmingham‘s Black Country folk back to life, from metalworkers and miners to nurses and schoolteachers – and even a pub landlord or two.

As you walk around, you’ll discover our collections, which were ‘Designated’ by Arts Council England in 2012, recognising their quality and national significance.

Most importantly, you’ll see history brought to life before your eyes in this top attraction in Birmingham – hear the clang of hammers, smell the smoke billowing from red brick chimneys and maybe even taste the best fish and chips in the Black Country, as yow explore shops, houses and industrial workshops. If you’re looking for things to do during school or half term holidays in and around Birmingham, Black Country Living Museum has plenty to see and do, yow are in for a bostin’ day!

My Sister and I travelled from South Wales to the Black Country museum today 1st January 2026 and what a delightful day we had. From the minute we entered the policemen and dodgy salesman were brilliant in character and it just got better and better from there. Each and every place we went into had stories to tell about the properties they were in, a little bit about themselves and we played a little game in the hardware shop of “guess the item” the gentleman was really interesting and informative as were a lot of his colleagues. The time flew by and obviously we were one of the last to leave, I can highly recommend this wonderful place. A huge thank you to the gentleman in the Toll house for his wonderful story telling, I could have stayed there forever listening to him, thank you.

We both had a great time at the museum, although perhaps museum is the wrong word to use, experience might be better😊 had a fantastic day exploring the different time periods through the streets, buildings and amazing staff on site. Would love to return for one of the special events. Now have a years membership so hope to return many times over the next 12 months👍👍

A wonderful area and well worth a visit if you’re nearby. Experiencing Birmingham’s historical way of life so authentically was a truly different and memorable experience. The school performance was my favourite 👍

The only way my experience would have been improved would be more time. There is so much to see and explore. Staff are very helpful, friendly and welcoming (thank you Kevin!). Buildings have been gathered and rebuilt on site to represent several periods of the Black Country's history. Victorian Era, 1930's and '40's, and into the '50's and '60's. The garage near the entrance has a grand collection of cars, trucks, motorcycles and more. I did have time for a glass of cider at Vaults in the Elephant & Castle. They have hands on workshops to make nails and Bricks. If you didn't already know, a lot of filming for the Peaky Blinders show has been done here. I imagine a fan of the show will recognize locations at the museum. Nov 26, 25 C&J

Open air museum, this is more like a small, Industrial Revolution, town with plenty to see and do. Very good parking facilities with plenty of disabled space as well as spaces for families, especially those with younger children giving easy access to site. A quick 2 minute walk from the car park to the main entrance where you are greeted into a large atrium in a modern building with a comprehensive gift shop to the right on entry. To the left there is an eatery serving up hot and cold food, and the usual coffees/teas and soft drinks etc. Exiting the main entrance the is a world of history in front of you starting with a tour of the mines. Sadly even early In the morning 10:30 (30 mins after opening) there was a long queue however this was accessible during the day. Old buildings galore, presented in various period decor all accessible to view both upstairs and down as well as black smiths, foundries, smelting, brick production, the list goes on. Heritage building with cars and bikes for viewing. The museum also runs a bus service with busses from 1940’s. They operate an early funfair with several period rides including ghost train, carousel and penny slot machines, well worth a ride. To the rear of the museum there is a modern building dedicated to the canal trust and preservation with the ability to take passenger on a boat ride through the caves where they mined line stone. Several found outlets in the various building, accessible toilet throughout the site, actors on site who interact with the public. All in all a fantastic day out FYI, I travelled from Essex the morning of the visit. Worth every penny.
