While on a visit to Birmingham make sure you stop off at it’s top attraction, the Black Country Living Museum is an award-winning open air museum that tells the story of one of the very first industrialised landscapes in Britain. Set across 26 acres, you’ll explore carefully reconstructed shops, houses and industrial areas that represent the Black Country’s story. You’ll learn how steam power, human ingenuity and an increasingly interconnected world transformed this region into a manufacturing powerhouse.

On your day out at Black Country Living Museum, you’ll meet our historic characters who’ll tell you stories of what it was really like to live and work during this revolutionary period of history.

We proudly share why our small region made a big impact on the world and bring Birmingham‘s Black Country folk back to life, from metalworkers and miners to nurses and schoolteachers – and even a pub landlord or two.

As you walk around, you’ll discover our collections, which were ‘Designated’ by Arts Council England in 2012, recognising their quality and national significance.

Most importantly, you’ll see history brought to life before your eyes in this top attraction in Birmingham – hear the clang of hammers, smell the smoke billowing from red brick chimneys and maybe even taste the best fish and chips in the Black Country, as yow explore shops, houses and industrial workshops. If you’re looking for things to do during school or half term holidays in and around Birmingham, Black Country Living Museum has plenty to see and do, yow are in for a bostin’ day!

An absolutely incredible experience from start to finish. Every detail of the museum has clearly been carefully thought out. The staff were fantastic — so friendly, fully committed to their roles, and incredibly informative throughout. We arrived at 10am and ended up staying until closing because there was just so much to see and do. Some of my highlights included the chemist’s demonstration on how pills were made, blacksmith demonstrations, visiting the infant centre and learning how to fit a cloth diaper, riding the bus, the gas show, and the fascinating talk at the mine. It was a truly memorable day. I would have loved the option to buy a book with more detailed information about each building in the museum. With three eager kids in tow, I didn’t get the chance to read all the signs. An idea....

My Sister and I travelled from South Wales to the Black Country museum today 1st January 2026 and what a delightful day we had. From the minute we entered the policemen and dodgy salesman were brilliant in character and it just got better and better from there. Each and every place we went into had stories to tell about the properties they were in, a little bit about themselves and we played a little game in the hardware shop of “guess the item” the gentleman was really interesting and informative as were a lot of his colleagues. The time flew by and obviously we were one of the last to leave, I can highly recommend this wonderful place. A huge thank you to the gentleman in the Toll house for his wonderful story telling, I could have stayed there forever listening to him, thank you.

The only way my experience would have been improved would be more time. There is so much to see and explore. Staff are very helpful, friendly and welcoming (thank you Kevin!). Buildings have been gathered and rebuilt on site to represent several periods of the Black Country's history. Victorian Era, 1930's and '40's, and into the '50's and '60's. The garage near the entrance has a grand collection of cars, trucks, motorcycles and more. I did have time for a glass of cider at Vaults in the Elephant & Castle. They have hands on workshops to make nails and Bricks. If you didn't already know, a lot of filming for the Peaky Blinders show has been done here. I imagine a fan of the show will recognize locations at the museum. Nov 26, 25 C&J

Such an amazing experience. The museum and what it offers is phenomenal and the staff and volunteers are so engaging. The way they have set this up is exemplary and we learned so much from the people there and the exhibits. The forging and Army and Navy store were two of our favourites as well as the canal and chain shop area. A must see if you are here, a short train ride from Birmingham New Street to Tipton and it's about a 15 minute walk to the museum. Excellent day.

What a fabulous place. Like stepping back in time. Friendly people with lots of information on the buildings. Even a trip down the mines to experience the horrible conditions miners had to endure. Go early as you can spend hours wondering throughout the place. Good food in a few places, with a warm cafe to start and finish. Absolutely loved the druggist with the very informative molly, learned lots I never knew.
