While on a visit to Birmingham make sure you stop off at it’s top attraction, the Black Country Living Museum is an award-winning open air museum that tells the story of one of the very first industrialised landscapes in Britain. Set across 26 acres, you’ll explore carefully reconstructed shops, houses and industrial areas that represent the Black Country’s story. You’ll learn how steam power, human ingenuity and an increasingly interconnected world transformed this region into a manufacturing powerhouse.

On your day out at Black Country Living Museum, you’ll meet our historic characters who’ll tell you stories of what it was really like to live and work during this revolutionary period of history.

We proudly share why our small region made a big impact on the world and bring Birmingham‘s Black Country folk back to life, from metalworkers and miners to nurses and schoolteachers – and even a pub landlord or two.

As you walk around, you’ll discover our collections, which were ‘Designated’ by Arts Council England in 2012, recognising their quality and national significance.

Most importantly, you’ll see history brought to life before your eyes in this top attraction in Birmingham – hear the clang of hammers, smell the smoke billowing from red brick chimneys and maybe even taste the best fish and chips in the Black Country, as yow explore shops, houses and industrial workshops. If you’re looking for things to do during school or half term holidays in and around Birmingham, Black Country Living Museum has plenty to see and do, yow are in for a bostin’ day!

Great way to get an idea of life around 1900. Some buildings are original and have been placed here, it would have been even cooler if the newer buildings also had that old look, now they look super new which makes it less realistic. I was most impressed by the trap factory, as if the workers had just left for the day. The workshops and tour through the mine were also really cool, as well as the people working there, very dedicated. I’d advise to take at least 4 hours, preferably 5 to do everything at a nice pace, we only had 3 and we had to rush a bit to see everything. We went on a Tuesday which was nice and quiet.

We had a lovely time at the Black Country Museum. Our highlights were the old games ( the electric shock machine is no joke) at the carnival, ghost train not to be missed and definitely the fish and chips. It really is a great reenactment of the past. I think we were lucky to go on a nice quiet day. We spent 3 hours there and there were still lots more to see.

Had the most amazing day. It is definitely worth the visit. There is so much to see. Have wanted to go here for years and it didn't disappoint . I would recommend it to everyone. It is so interesting finding out all the interesting facts about the whole place. The staff are amazing and so professional. You can spend the whole day there and not get bored. I will definitely be going again. Amazing !!!!

Had a great day out here, we got in as it opened and accessed it from the Dudley canal and tunnel museum, which gets you to the main part quicker than the main entrance. (It's also cheaper parking) The museum is well laid out and they have all the staff dressed in period costume and most are very knowledgeable about their surroundings and can talk in detail about the part they are playing along with the history. It's a collection of buildings that have been transferred from the local area and rebuilt as they were and they are all filled with things from the era they represent. They have lots of demonstrations of local crafts and works. There is a drift mine on site that you can enter in parties of 25 people, it's a 30 minute walk with some of the shafts being only 4ft high. There's places to eat and drink around site and the prices are reasonable along with rest room facilities at various points. It's set on a slope that leads you all the way down to the canal at the bottom, there is a bus that runs all day so you can hop on and off to transfer from the lower part to the top. It's a great experience for all ages. The ticket also allows you repeat visits for a year, if you buy the year ticket you get discounted prices off the food and drink. If you have time visit the Dudley canal and tunnel trust at the bottom of the site and have a boat ride into the limestone mine.
