Forge Mill Needle Museum is a unique heritage site nestled in Redditch, Worcestershire, that offers a captivating glimpse into the industrial history of the Midlands and, more specifically, the needle and fishing tackle industries which once flourished here. Housed within a restored 19th-century water-powered mill, the museum stands as a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the workers who were integral to Redditch’s rise as the epicentre of the world’s needle production.
Upon entering Forge Mill, visitors are transported back in time through exhibits that meticulously demonstrate the complexities of needle making—a process that, despite its seeming simplicity, required remarkable precision and craftsmanship. The museum’s collections include an array of needle types, showcasing the diversity of products once manufactured, from sewing and knitting needles to surgical implements.
The visitor experience is enriched by the original water-powered machinery, proudly conserved and, on specific demonstration days, operated to reveal the powerful alliance between man and nature that drove industrial advancements. The mill’s scenic setting also offers a serene backdrop, with the nearby Bordesley Abbey Visitor Centre presenting archaeological finds from the excavated Cistercian Abbey, adding layers of historical significance to the site.
Educational programs, special exhibitions, and seasonal events make Forge Mill Needle Museum more than just a journey through industrial history; it’s a dynamic cultural venue and keeps local heritage alive.
