Manchester has one of the largest university museums in the UK, Manchester Museum. It is over one hundred and thirty years old and is located a short taxi ride from Deansgate train station. You’ll find this family attraction in the heart of Manchester’s city centre, with loads of activities and events for all the family and it’s Free to enter.

Take the kids on a wonderful day out in Manchester, where they will be astonished at over 4.5 million items all under one roof. Manchester Museum has a range of collections including: Egypt and Sudan, Archaeology, Earth Sciences, Entomology, Archery, Botany, Living Cultures, Zoology, Numismatics, and the Vivarium

They will learn about the museum’s incredible stories and our free activities made for families will help you take a deep dive into some of the most fascinating objects on display.

The outstanding collection of Egyptian and Sudanese objects – one of the largest in the UK – illustrates both everyday life and preparations for the afterlife. The homes of the ancient Egyptians do not generally survive, but the museum’s collection includes exceptionally well-preserved everyday objects from a pyramid-builders’ town known as Kahun which are nearly 4,000 years old and give a glimpse into how ordinary people lived. Be sure to check out the important collection of gilded mummy masks and realistic painted images known as ‘Faiyum Portraits’, dating back to the Graeco-Roman Period (around 300 BCE to 300 CE).

They have a collection of around 100,000 fossils, including one of the most important collections of Ice Age animals in Europe, particularly from Creswell Crags, which has helped transform our understanding of climate change.

Gasp at the shear size of the skeleton of a sperm whale, or the giant Japanese incense burner and be sure to visit one the rarest frogs in the world, the Harlequin Toad, and with over 2.5 million specimens, the museum’s Entomology collection is thought to be the third largest entomological depository in the UK.

Getting to know the objects and asking questions can help children to make sense of the world around them and spark big ideas. Being close to culture can also offer an escape from the pressures of modern life and provide a space to reflect and bond.

At Manchester Museum you will find unmissable events, creative resources and the important stuff to make your family’s visit one to remember!

Make a day of it in the Picnic area, a new ground floor area offering a welcoming environment where you can eat your picnic lunches. It is beautifully decorated to complement the Museum Café and includes tables, microwaves, work surfaces, a sink, and bins. It is free to use and does not need to be booked in advance. Or why not try the Museum Café where the family-friendly café can be accessed through the Main Hall or from Oxford Road. It serves delicious vegetarian food and drinks all day.

Such a fun day activity! I was happy to see the T. rex skeleton and live poison dart frogs! I enjoyed the Chinese exhibit and the wild exhibit. The book store was so full of beautiful goodies. I’d recommend this place to check out! It’s 100% free to enter! They accept donations to keep it free.

The Manchester Museum is at the outer skirt of the Uni' s compound on the Oxford Road, located accessibly to City centre. The Museum opens daily from 10:00 to 15:00 but the Museum will call off at 16:30 and let visitors leave gradually to avoide congestion. It had brightened me up by the species of live reptiles and taxidermy animals when I visited the Museum with friends, a day to the University of Manchester. When exploring the amazing creatures in the small aquariums, it was a fun trying to find out the dart frogs, chamelons or green tree frogs ..etcs. You need to have 20/20 eye sight. The Museum has a collection of taxidermy animals that you can test yourselves, how many you can name them out. It saddened me much was the "Disasters of the World" section by the exhibiting the remains coverd by volanic ash in the destruction by volcanic quakes. This impressed me deeply in the fact of such fate that could not be avoided. It will cause numbers of causalty. Fate cannot be monitored and predicted. One of the much signature exhibits of the Museum is the Japanes bronze sculpture displayed at entrance of building. This polishing and shining black sculpture reflects the perfectionism as claimed by Japsnese culture. Here, people can broaden up their knowledge horizon in the greatest creation and the amazing nature. It is worth to spend a day here with family.

A wonderful place to visit. The most pleasing thing I observed was the prayer room where people from all religions can pray. It has payer mats, a carpeted floor and few chairs. A special arrangement for ablution is also there.

Absolutely love this museum! My favourite part was prehistoric part as I love dinosaurs since I was little 🙈 we have spent there around 2 hours but we could stay longer to read more interesting stories and explanations. Definitely will be back!

Saw in the news that this won the award for the best european museum in 2025 and wanted to check the whys. I was not ready to be blown away. The directors are not praised enough. It is a mix of British museum with natural history museum, but with the benefit that it does not get exhausting. Despite the smallish size, the collection is insanely rich and it is a very rare museum because it has a vivarium with some amazing reptiles. My favourite part of the museum is how aware they are around the impact of the British empire on other cultures. Very interesting take on British history that makes us think and reflect. This is how all museums should be run. Congratulations for the amazing work.
