As you step into the garden, you are greeted by a mesmerising display of vibrant flowers, towering trees, and lush greenery. The air is filled with the sweet aroma of blooming flowers, and the gentle rustling of leaves creates a tranquil atmosphere.
The oldest botanic garden in the UK, and home to over 5,000 different plant species, each carefully curated to create a harmonious and educational experience. As you wander through the arboretum, you encounter majestic oak trees, towering redwoods, and delicate cherry blossoms, creating a captivating juxtaposition of size and colour.
Bluebell Wood is a mature oak woodland, where the remains of some ancient specimens have been left to decay naturally, creating a rich environment. It is estimated that a mature oak tree is home to nearly 300 different species of animals; for instance, worms and caterpillars live on the tree and they are eaten by badgers, foxes and birds. Visitors can enjoy a living carpet of native English bluebells between late April and mid-May. In the lighter and airier Lime Wood, you will find some of the tallest limes in the UK.
Visitors can explore themed gardens that showcase plants from specific regions or habitats, providing a fascinating journey through different ecological landscapes. The medicinal garden offers insight into the healing properties of various plants, while the water garden is a serene oasis teeming with aquatic life.
Whether you are a botany enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, the Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum offers an enriching experience that celebrates the wonder of the natural world.
