Situated underneath Magdalen College Tower, at the lower end of Oxford’s world famous high street you will find Magdalen Bridge Boathouse.

Here you can hire traditionally crafted punts, rowing boats and pedalos or spoil yourself by hiring a Chauffeured boat.

We can also supply a pre-ordered picnic hamper with your chauffeured punt if requested.

Punting – a favourite Oxford past time for visitors, residents and students alike.

At Magdalen Bridge Boathouse you can hire a punt for an hour or if you want to make a day of it, you can stay on the river as long as you like, returning the punt to the boathouse at least half an hour before sunset.

The trip: As you set off south from the boathouse you glide gently past Oxford’s famous Botanic Gardens, through Christ Church College Meadows, where Lewis Carroll taught in the mid-19th century when he wrote the famous Alice Through the Looking Glass (1871) and Alice in Wonderland (1865). Then either take the river left past St Hilda’s College gardens, past the stunning Magdalen School rose gardens, under the miniature white bridges and back past the Botanic Gardens to the Boathouse. Or alternatively, if you are feeling adventurous, continue south towards the Isis (Oxford’s name for the River Thames), along the entire Christ Church Meadow to where the river opens up allowing you to enjoy this stunning natural river environment.

Another option is to travel north from the Boathouse, past Magdalen College Tower and up past the Angel and Greyhound meadows, past Magdalen College gardens and into Oxford’s stunning countryside

Punting on the River Cherwell is the definitive Oxford leisure activity, perfectly blending gentle adventure with idyllic views. The classic, busy route starts at Magdalen Bridge, gliding past the Deer Park and college gardens. For a more tranquil experience, begin at Cherwell Boathouse upstream; it's quieter and feels more secluded. My strong advice is to go early or on a weekday evening to escape the crowds. Book ahead in summer. Wear casual attire and secure your belongings—getting slightly wet or tangled in reeds is part of the fun. Always punt upstream first so you have an easy, current-assisted drift back. While mastering the pole is a rewarding challenge, consider hiring a chauffeur for a portion of your trip. It lets you truly relax, take photos, and learn about the riverside history from a local expert. Pack a picnic and a drink to enjoy on the boat; there are few better ways to spend a sunny Oxford afternoon. This isn't just a tourist tick-box; it’s a timeless ritual that offers a unique, peaceful vantage point of the city's spires and meadows. Embracing its slow pace and occasional clumsiness is key to unlocking its charm.

Oxford punting is an unforgettable and relaxing experience! Gliding along the river surrounded by historic colleges, lush trees, and beautiful bridges feels magical. It’s peaceful, scenic, and the perfect way to enjoy the charm of Oxford. Whether you punt yourself or sit back and let someone else steer, it’s a must-do activity — calm, fun, and truly picturesque!

Thoroughly enjoyed it. We took the chauffeur driven one as we wanted to enjoy the views than focusing on manoeuvring the boat. We didn’t want to hit other boats or block others and cause problems as well. The experience was just awesome. We liked it more than the Cambridge one.

Punting in Oxford is a truly enjoyable experience. Moving along the river at your own pace allows you to relax and take in the beautiful views of the city. It is a peaceful and unique way to experience Oxford, offering a different perspective from the usual walking tours. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a calm and memorable activity.

We loved our experience punting in Oxford. When we were there in July, punting was 32 pounds for an hour (self-drive), and 50 pounds for 30 minute with someone punting for you (chauffeured). We chose to self-drive option, and my husband picked up the technique pretty quick (though this was not common for others based on observation). There is room for up to 5 people with your rental. We were given a map and they held on to my drivers license when we were out. When you return they want to funnel everyone through their gift shop (they even told me to turn around and that I had to go out that specific way, even though there was a school group of 30 in the shop and no room to enter. Only after that did they let me leave up the walkway). They were well organized and we were able to just walk up without much wait on a sunny Monday afternoon in July.
