Situated underneath Magdalen College Tower, at the lower end of Oxford’s world famous high street you will find Magdalen Bridge Boathouse.

Here you can hire traditionally crafted punts, rowing boats and pedalos or spoil yourself by hiring a Chauffeured boat.

We can also supply a pre-ordered picnic hamper with your chauffeured punt if requested.

Punting – a favourite Oxford past time for visitors, residents and students alike.

At Magdalen Bridge Boathouse you can hire a punt for an hour or if you want to make a day of it, you can stay on the river as long as you like, returning the punt to the boathouse at least half an hour before sunset.

The trip: As you set off south from the boathouse you glide gently past Oxford’s famous Botanic Gardens, through Christ Church College Meadows, where Lewis Carroll taught in the mid-19th century when he wrote the famous Alice Through the Looking Glass (1871) and Alice in Wonderland (1865). Then either take the river left past St Hilda’s College gardens, past the stunning Magdalen School rose gardens, under the miniature white bridges and back past the Botanic Gardens to the Boathouse. Or alternatively, if you are feeling adventurous, continue south towards the Isis (Oxford’s name for the River Thames), along the entire Christ Church Meadow to where the river opens up allowing you to enjoy this stunning natural river environment.

Another option is to travel north from the Boathouse, past Magdalen College Tower and up past the Angel and Greyhound meadows, past Magdalen College gardens and into Oxford’s stunning countryside

Peaceful Oxford moments by the river This part of Oxford feels completely different from the academic side — it’s quieter, greener, and more relaxed. I walked along the riverside near Magdalen Bridge and saw people punting slowly along the water. The sound of the water, birds, and trees made it feel far away from city life, even though I was only a few minutes from the colleges. I didn’t go punting myself this time, but just watching the boats glide past was peaceful. The houses, gardens, and old bridges along the water give this area a storybook feel. It’s also a great place to take photos or just sit and rest for a while. If you have a few hours in Oxford, I highly recommend walking around this area — especially in the afternoon or early evening. It’s one of those places where you don’t have to do much — just being there is enough.

My friend and I went punting on the river Cherwell and decided to do it ourselves instead of hiring a chauffeur. It was our first time, and the experience was both fun and a bit frightening. Without proper technique, we had to put in a lot of effort, which left us pretty exhausted by the end. Despite the challenge, we managed to complete the journey within the time limit and didn’t have to pay any extra charges £8, a tiring but memorable adventure!

Thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable! The “chauffeur” or “punter” was knowledgeable about the colleges and history which made it very interesting indeed.

Had a fantastic experience. They had a massive group who had arrived later than planned, but despite this, they managed to arrange a punt and had a great trip, even though it rained - cant control the weather! Never been to Oxford before so thank you for a nice experience to remember. Definitely recommend.
