If you’re looking for a city centre restaurant in Manchester, with a friendly and trendy atmosphere, you’ll not choose wrong with The Refuge. With eclectic small plates to hearty Sunday roasts, head down for a weekly catch-up with a gathering of your nearest and dearest or simply a night out on the town.

The Refuge use the best ingredients the North West has to offer, the food takes inspiration from around the globe, with a few stops closer to home. With 10,000sq ft of drinking and dining for everyone and anyone, all under one roof. Come As You Are.

From small plates to Sunday roast, flavours from all over the globe influence their Dining Room menus. An informal, but informed setting, the Dining Room has proved to be hugely popular, so be sure to make a reservation for evening, weekend and Sunday lunch tables.

With no airs or graces, the Public Bar is the beating heart of The Refuge. Coffee and co-working in the morning, board games after lunch, and cocktails and craft ales into the early hours. The resident DJs curate the experience, Thursday through too Saturday with an eclectic mix of jazz, swing, funk, soul and house.

Nestled between the Public Bar and Dining Room is The Winter Garden, where we’ve brought the outside in. The perfect spot for lounging and socialising with friends. If you’re looking for somewhere to book for a special occasion then you can book The Den. The perfect spot for birthdays or work dos for you and up to 100 guests. Visited in December when the place had a great festive buzz—people out enjoying themselves, soaking up the atmosphere. We sat in the restaurant rather than the bar, which felt more relaxed. Prices were fair, especially if you're used to London rates. The starters of hummus, sourdough, and chips were all solid, and service was friendly. We didn’t stay for a full meal as we’d already eaten, but the decor inside was lovely. Bonus points for keeping the service charge at a sensible 10%, unlike London’s creeping 13.5% with no added value. Would happily return.

Delightful relaxed but upmarket eatery. Limited vegetarian choice but the dishes we had were delicious and we left replete without the deserts. Special thanks to the bar team who whisked us up Brandy Alexanders even though they aren't on either the cocktail or dessert menus. 😁🍸

We ordered the croquettes, which were delicious and full of cheesy goodness, definitely recommend if you are looking for a starter. For our mains we ordered the mix Sunday roast, which meant you get a bit of everything. The pork had crispy skin and tasted extremely tender, the beef was soft and not overcooked, just pink how I like it. I was also surprised the chicken wasn’t dry, was very succulent and juicy. The only thing that let it down was the food wasn’t warm enough, the potatoes felt a bit cold for our liking, otherwise everything else was good. Love the ambience of the restaurant and friendly staff.

Came here for drinks only. The atmosphere is beautiful with high ceilings, open space and excellent cocktails. Great for date nights. Beware on the pricier side, but worth it!

Stunning architecture and setting as always in this beautiful restaurant. Staff were extremely friendly but the meal was slightly chaotic. We asked to sit in a booth, of which there were at least 4 empty that we could see, but were told they were unavailable. They remained empty all evening, The sharing plates from the “while you wait” section of the starters came with no side plates or cutlery. When we requested side plates they brought 2. (We were a party of 4). Then when we asked for more they brought one more - which seemed slightly bizarre. The wine came with the food even though the soft drinks came before the food. The main course cutlery came in a big pile which the waiter left in the middle of the table with some extra napkins, for us to distribute, canteen style. The roast was lovely (2 of us had the veggie option) really tasty couldn’t fault it. Gorgeous Yorkshire. We didn’t have coffee or desert as the staff were so obviously shutting down the restaurant around us (around 9.30) that it felt unwelcoming and that it would be a bit rude of us to stay. It felt far from the slick dining experience I remember from The Refuge and I’d hesitate before going back.
