FAQ's

Do you have a bar or a special area for just drinks and aperitifis?

Unfortunately not, our restaurant spaces are reserved for dining.

Is it possible to book a table for desserts?

We respectfully ask that our guests order a minimum of one main course per person.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend reserving tables and suites in advance to avoid disappointment.

What is the difference between the two dining rooms?

The Original Dining room is lined with tapestry and leather panelling and has a low oak painted heraldic ceiling. The Secret Garden is an elegant room with a high, painted ceiling depicting images of the tarot, and French doors leading to an urn-filled terrace.

Is the Secret Garden suitable for winter?

Yes, the Secret Garden dining room is an indoor space.

Are your facilities accessible?

Unfortunately not. Due to the location of our building in the very heart of the gothic Old Town we are limited in what we can do. There are 18 steps to the Secret Garden and four steps to the Original Dining Room.

This is a review of the restaurant: This is a fine-dining, exceptional experience in beautiful surroundings. We were in the upper dining room, the other dining room is lower and more airy--ours had dark hard woods and candle light: very atmospheric. The service was highly professional and knowledgeable. They have a separate menu with allergens--we were able to find several dishes and a dessert that were dairy free. They have a nicely deep selection of single malts and three beers in bottle when we visited. Their Gin and Tonic has a touch of vanilla and is very, very good. They also have a very extensive wine menu. We had their chilled seafood board and it was incredible. The quality of the crab, eel, and salmon was excellent--but it was the accompaniments that set this presentation apart: perilla leaf, beet creams, bitter melon. We also had their vegan moussaka which was tasty and wonderfully-presented, although overshadowed by the quality of the fish in the previous dish. We finished with a vegan yogurt sponge that was, once again, pushed a cut above by the perfect accompanying flavors--berries, vegan creams, etc. Get to town and make reservations as soon as you can. Truly a wonderful Edinburgh experience.

The restaurant is awesome! Read their history sheet on it to learn about the location. The food is outstanding and the service is 5 star in every regard. My daughter and I had the lamb wellington and it was outstanding. SO good! Great wine list (but you'll pay for it.) Sit in the restaurant which is below street level and had great ambiance. Highly recommended!!

My husband and I had dinner at the restaurant and it was perhaps the coolest dining experience we’ve ever had! The history of the building, the ambiance with the low dark ceiling and candle light was unlike anything we’ve ever seen. We felt truly transported into another era. The food was delicious and a bit new not having Scottish food before but wow we enjoyed every bite! A must visit on any visit to Edinburgh

The place is undeniably beautiful, and the food was tasty. The waiting staff were lovely and attentive throughout our meal. However, our experience was affected by a very rude receptionist at the entrance, which set a disappointing tone right from the start. To make things worse, I found a piece of plastic in my dessert — which is unacceptable, especially at this price point. Overall, while the ambience and some parts of the service were enjoyable, the overall experience did not justify the high cost. Definitely not worth the premium price.

The food was not worth the money. But the experience was worth going. Nothing flashy or wowing. A place to have a drink and enjoy some time. Good spot. But you must order at least one main dish in order to get anything. And as I said before, not worth money for the food.
