FAQ's

Do you have a bar or a special area for just drinks and aperitifis?

Unfortunately not, our restaurant spaces are reserved for dining.

Is it possible to book a table for desserts?

We respectfully ask that our guests order a minimum of one main course per person.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend reserving tables and suites in advance to avoid disappointment.

What is the difference between the two dining rooms?

The Original Dining room is lined with tapestry and leather panelling and has a low oak painted heraldic ceiling. The Secret Garden is an elegant room with a high, painted ceiling depicting images of the tarot, and French doors leading to an urn-filled terrace.

Is the Secret Garden suitable for winter?

Yes, the Secret Garden dining room is an indoor space.

Are your facilities accessible?

Unfortunately not. Due to the location of our building in the very heart of the gothic Old Town we are limited in what we can do. There are 18 steps to the Secret Garden and four steps to the Original Dining Room.

This review is about the restaurant. We came for the first time in August and it was explendid, so now that we're back on November we thought it was worth to try again and to our surprise the menu is completely different but we tried the pumpkin risotto and it was literally the best risotto we've ever tried! I am convinced that even the food you think you don't like, you will like it here. We will come back without doubt ☺️

I've never visited the hotel but I've dfined at the restaraunt twice, first in 2024 and then again in 2025. The building, location and interior is genuinely breathtaking. It truly feels like stepping back in time. The atmosphere of the restaurant is tranquil and the guests have always seemed to respect the ambience as well. The dark lights goes well with the gothic feel of the room, but I'd also like to add that as a nepsy girlie it truly helps in creating a peaceful experience. My experience of the service is also first class. They have always made me feel welcome (even when dining alone, which is not always a given) and made the experience feel grand. I am not a foodie so my thoughts on the food should be considered as such. The menu is very seasonal so I can only speak of the menus in the fall of 2024 and 2025. In 2024 I had a heavenly risotto that I still think about from time to time. In 2025 I had a vegetarian dish of some sort and it didn't meet my expectations of what the restaurant is (that's the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. The dessert was heavenly on both times and the house lemonade (or was it ice tea?) is really good.

This is for the restaurant only as we did not stay at the hotel. My fiancé and I got engaged in Edinburgh and one of the many things we were excited for was trying The Witchery for the first time. Especially after seeing so many raving reviews and the romantic Gothic atmosphere it has. Unfortunately, this restaurant did not live up to its reputation. It is mostly hype for the decor and atmosphere. The food was not terrible, but it was definitely not worth the price they charge. You can have way better tasting food at a bunch of different restaurants in Edinburgh and pay less. If I am paying 70+ GBP for a steak, I should not have to send it back because it's not cooked properly. Upon getting it back, it still wasn't cooked medium like we asked. We didn't want to waste more time and send it back twice, so I just ate it. Any other place it wouldn't matter this much, but if you're going to charge high prices and act like a serious upscale restaurant, you need to have chefs that know exactly what they're doing. If you want to go for the decor and photos, do it, but be aware you're wasting money.

Honestly you can 100% miss this restaurant in Edinburgh. Over priced for mediocre food. Do you want to pay £5 for tap water and £5 for bread for the table, sure that's fine, a £12 bottle of wine is £40 sure that's fine, it's a nice location and recommended restaurant that so many people love. The mash, bland and cold, no flavour at all, you would think maybe abit buttery with garlic? Anything? No. Meat and gravy decent at best. At best this is a subpar restaurant disguised as fine dining. You can spend less on Michelin star restaurant everywhere else in the world. I could care less about cost if the food was good, good food makes you forget about the bill and keeps you coming back.... but if the food is subpar you start to wonder what your spending money on. The staff was amazing which is why I made this two stars. Seriously the food is okay at best, after you eat here you will come back read this review and ask yourself why you spent your money here

Had the afternoon tea, at £50 pp it was expensive for what you got. The sandwiches had very little flavor and definately not seasoned. The deserts we better but nothing overtly special. My daughter asked for the vegetarian option when she booked back in August! and she got a replacement advocado with 2 slices of tomato and a piece of iceberg lettuce. The scones were very nice. The service was also very good and the wait staff very attentive, without being over bearing. Also the bathroom attendant was lovely. I had booked for Feb for dinner but thinking about cancelling if their idea over vegetarian is this unimaginative. The location is beautiful but not worth it if the food doesnt match.
