FAQ's

Do you have a bar or a special area for just drinks and aperitifis?

Unfortunately not, our restaurant spaces are reserved for dining.

Is it possible to book a table for desserts?

We respectfully ask that our guests order a minimum of one main course per person.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend reserving tables and suites in advance to avoid disappointment.

What is the difference between the two dining rooms?

The Original Dining room is lined with tapestry and leather panelling and has a low oak painted heraldic ceiling. The Secret Garden is an elegant room with a high, painted ceiling depicting images of the tarot, and French doors leading to an urn-filled terrace.

Is the Secret Garden suitable for winter?

Yes, the Secret Garden dining room is an indoor space.

Are your facilities accessible?

Unfortunately not. Due to the location of our building in the very heart of the gothic Old Town we are limited in what we can do. There are 18 steps to the Secret Garden and four steps to the Original Dining Room.

What an amazing experience! I booked reservations for dinner before anything else in Edinburgh. The ambience was incredible and it felt as if we stepped back in time. The food was outstanding and the staff was extremely attentive. It is obvious they take great pride. We had the lamb wellington for two and it was phenomenal. I ordered the chocolate torte and it was very clear why it's been a favorite for decades. What an incredible way to end our trip in Edinburgh. Thank you again.

An Enchanting Lunch at The Witchery We had a truly memorable lunch at The Witchery by the Castle. The setting is stunning — opulent, gothic, and full of character, making the whole experience feel special from the moment you walk in. We started with fresh oysters, beautifully presented and incredibly fresh, followed by a delicious serving of traditional haggis that was rich and full of flavour. For the main course, we enjoyed the Beef Wellington, which was tender, succulent, and cooked to perfection. A real highlight of the meal. Service was friendly and professional throughout, adding to the relaxed yet refined atmosphere. A fantastic spot for a luxurious lunch in Edinburgh — highly recommended!

So there we were, fresh off a stormy Edinburgh Castle visit, looking like damp extras from Outlander who had lost a fight with the wind. My umbrella? R.I.P. It gave its life for the cause. Our aesthetic: “windblown chic.” We left our castle tour hungry. Scratch that-we were hangry, and we began our quest to find some dinner, and ended up stumbling across The Witchery. Now, when I say this place looked cool, I mean Instagram influencer with a fog machine and unlimited potted plants cool. Gothic but romantic. Lush but mysterious. The kind of place that makes you think, “Yes, this is where a very fancy vampire would take you on a third date.” Despite us looking like we’d just survived a low-budget expedition, the hostess was incredibly kind. She asked if we had a reservation (we didn’t-obviously, we were feral and unscheduled), but she still found us a table. The ambiance? Ten. Out. Of. Ten. If I could bottle the vibe, I’d spray it on myself before interviews or awkward parent-teacher conferences. The décor alone deserves its own social media page. As for the food: my friends had the bisque and the fish, and they said they enjoyed their meals. I had the celeriac, which was fine. Not bad! Just… very “forest-nibble food.” Small portion, big plate, high concept. But the bread and butter and the drinks were excellent! The service was stellar. Everyone was lovely and treated us like we belonged there, despite looking…not the best. Final thoughts: If you’re in Edinburgh, go to The Witchery. For my fellow Americans-you do need to pay for water. I think you can request tap, but I’m not sure. Also, bread and butter are not complementary.

The thing about Witchery is that it's good but quite overpriced. I visited the Secret Gardens restaurant and therefore can only speak about that. Food is modern british cuisine but a bit over rated and overpriced. There are good bits about the restaurant - ambience, staff is very helpful and understanding, great location. Food is 3/5 as it's average on a regular day and maybe 4/5 on the very good day you visit this place. I had a duck, artichoke and a smoked fish platter. Smoked fish platter is highly recommended to those who like sea food especially fish. To those who just eat it for the sake of company just avoid it. Duck 🦆 was amazing and tasted very juicy - nicely cooked. These are the two recommendations which I think should be tried if you are visiting the place and there's a drink called french zero zero - DON'T HAVE IT!!

The Witchery is NOT worth it. We were excited to dine at The Witchery, given its reputation and stunning setting, but unfortunately, the experience left much to be desired. The atmosphere was undeniably charming—our candlelit corner was cozy, though it also meant we were largely overlooked by the staff. The food was good, but far from exceptional, and certainly not reflective of the price point. What truly disappointed us, however, was the service. The staff came across as aloof and pretentious, with one even making a disparaging remark about France. Once I shared that this is where I am from, he doubled down (!). There were several chances to turn the moment into a lighthearted exchange, but instead it was awkwardly reinforced, which was disheartening and frankly rude. We’ve been fortunate to travel extensively and have enjoyed many memorable meals, from hole-in-the-wall gems to Michelin-starred dining. This simply didn’t compare—not in hospitality, nor in value or taste. The setting may impress, but for us, The Witchery felt more like a touristy experience than an authentic or interesting one. Don't spend your hard-earned money on a place that does not deserve it.
