FAQ's

Do you have a bar or a special area for just drinks and aperitifis?

Unfortunately not, our restaurant spaces are reserved for dining.

Is it possible to book a table for desserts?

We respectfully ask that our guests order a minimum of one main course per person.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend reserving tables and suites in advance to avoid disappointment.

What is the difference between the two dining rooms?

The Original Dining room is lined with tapestry and leather panelling and has a low oak painted heraldic ceiling. The Secret Garden is an elegant room with a high, painted ceiling depicting images of the tarot, and French doors leading to an urn-filled terrace.

Is the Secret Garden suitable for winter?

Yes, the Secret Garden dining room is an indoor space.

Are your facilities accessible?

Unfortunately not. Due to the location of our building in the very heart of the gothic Old Town we are limited in what we can do. There are 18 steps to the Secret Garden and four steps to the Original Dining Room.

We celebrated my other half's birthday here and it was magical. We were seated in the Secret Garden room, softly lit by candles, creating a beautifully intimate atmosphere that made the evening feel very special. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and made us feel cared for throughout the night. We were also chuffed that the staff remembered it was my partner’s birthday and surprised him with a little treat at dessert. The food and wine were excellent. Overall, it was an unforgettable evening. I would return in a heartbeat.

This is one of the best dining experiences you can get. Outside on the Royal Mile is a tourist trap, but walk through the close and you are transported to a beautiful, quiet courtyard. The ambience is magical, the wait staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was incredible. We had 3 delicious courses with cocktails, and loved every bit of it. Hospitality at its finest, highly recommended.

I've never visited the hotel but I've dfined at the restaraunt twice, first in 2024 and then again in 2025. The building, location and interior is genuinely breathtaking. It truly feels like stepping back in time. The atmosphere of the restaurant is tranquil and the guests have always seemed to respect the ambience as well. The dark lights goes well with the gothic feel of the room, but I'd also like to add that as a nepsy girlie it truly helps in creating a peaceful experience. My experience of the service is also first class. They have always made me feel welcome (even when dining alone, which is not always a given) and made the experience feel grand. I am not a foodie so my thoughts on the food should be considered as such. The menu is very seasonal so I can only speak of the menus in the fall of 2024 and 2025. In 2024 I had a heavenly risotto that I still think about from time to time. In 2025 I had a vegetarian dish of some sort and it didn't meet my expectations of what the restaurant is (that's the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. The dessert was heavenly on both times and the house lemonade (or was it ice tea?) is really good.

I can't speak for staying here.We had lunch. The atmosphere is nice. The food was delicious. It is a smaller menu with a three course option or individual entrees. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. Our greeting was not warm and welcoming, but our service was great. The atmosphere inside is nice. The food was perfect

The restaurant presents a menu with strong visual impact, featuring carefully crafted descriptions and offerings that draw on both Scottish tradition and international influences. However, behind the impressive presentation, the culinary substance leaves much to be desired. The overall experience is certainly worth a visit for the setting: the Gothic-style dining room is simply magnificent, and the historic atmosphere surrounding the venue makes the context truly unique. The staff stand out for their kindness and attentiveness, always ready to assist guests with care. From a gastronomic perspective, however, the experience did not live up to expectations or to the prices charged. The meats, compared to those found in more understated establishments that literally melt in the mouth, here proved less refined in both texture and quality. The oysters with champagne, while correctly presented, offered nothing memorable and remained rather average. The handling of the wine list also conveyed more apprehension than expertise: wine should not be chosen in haste, but in relation to the menu and with the necessary time. In summary, a restaurant with a spectacular setting and attentive service, but from a strictly culinary standpoint the experience is disappointing. The price-to-quality ratio is not justified, particularly when considering a service charge of around £30. A place that enchants for its atmosphere, more than for its gastronomic value. One star for the experience, one star for the Spanish guy 🖤
