Cardiff Market (also known as Central Market) is one of Cardiff’s top attractions and can be found in the middle of the vibrant and exciting city centre. From its humble beginnings as a farmers’ market trading in livestock and farm produce, it has evolved over the centuries to suit the changing needs of traders and consumers, both locally and further afield looking to do a bit of Cardiff shopping.
Traders in the market offer a variety of fresh produce, cooked food, various delicacies and more durable goods.
A centre of food excellence, with an enormous variety of other products on offer, this Cardiff attraction has a fascinating story to tell. A trader of note is Ashton’s the fishmongers, who claim to have traded in the market since 1866 at the Trinity Street entrance selling a wide range of fresh seafood. In 2012 they hit the headlines when they sold meat from a 20 foot long 550lb thresher shark.
Another longstanding trader is The Market Deli, a small family run business trading for over 100 years, located at the same stall since 1928. Cardiff Market’s Victorian building has been listed and is currently Grade II.
So if you need things to do in Cardiff then spend some time walking around the market, upstairs and down, to take in the fresh smells and sights of all of the different food stalls. Look around the clothing stalls from retro wear to modern day. Sample the fresh made pizzas upstairs as you look over the wrap-around balcony and don’t forget to look up at the fantastic glass roof and the Victorian beam work spanning the whole length of the roof.
There are two entrances; one found from St. Mary Street, with the other entrance being located at Trinity Street, near St. John’s Church.
The Trinity Street entrance is a pedestrian location with landscaping and seats for shoppers to use to take a relaxing break from a busy day of Cardiff shopping.
