Discover Coventry Cathedral with a 30 min car ride from Birmingham city centre. This historic attraction is found in the city centre, is easily accessed and family friendly. Dig deep into the history of the Cathedral with a guided or self guided tour around this famous old landmark. A great day out for all the family.

They recommend that you start your journey by visiting the Ruins first (ideally entering from Cuckoo Lane) which was destroyed in the Coventry Blitz during WW2, and now recognised as an international symbol of The story of Coventry Cathedral, then onto explore the New Cathedral which is a modernist masterpiece featuring works by some of the greatest artists of the 1950s and 1960s.

They welcome groups to the Cathedral for those who want to dive a little deeper into the history. Their dedicated volunteers team provide guided tours and for group bookings (which include a guided tour), please contact them in advance for tours and group bookings to book in your slot. The Tower Climb and Blitz Museum are also open on select days, so please plan ahead.

Alternatively, if you’d like to do a self-guided tour they recommend purchasing their Guidebook, which you can buy from the Gift Shop in the New Cathedral. The guidebook has the top points of interest in it, great for those short on time too!

Founded with a Saxon nunnery circa AD 700, Coventry has endured conflict with King Canute (whose army destroyed the nunnery), Henry II (whose army largely destroyed Coventry Castle), Henry VIII (whose Reformation saw the destruction of the first cathedral), Charles I (Coventry was a parliamentary stronghold) and, in 1940, with Hitler’s Luftwaffe. The city and cathedral share a history of conflict just as, today, they share a determination to build justice and peace, by healing wounds and learning to live with difference.

Such a beautiful experience visiting this wonderful Cathedral. First time in Coventry, a birthday weekend with friends to hear our friend Phil performing as the visiting organist. What a treat. The building is magnificent, everyone from door staff to clergy extremely friendly. All in all a very special experience I would not have missed. 🤗

We focused more on the ruins, which are free to see and include multiple signs about their history, World War II bombing, and architecture. We skipped climbing the tower and blitz museum but these looked interesting too. Several benches to sit on, and able to also see the current Coventry Cathedral next door.

I have had a totally different experience visiting this cathedral, seeing the remains of what's left from the bombings during world war 2, and seeing the words 'Father Forgive' written on the wall behind the wooden cross, and listening to a beautiful small group singing hymns and preaching the goodness of Jesus, it really captured the heart (I was sad to see they had left when I finished my tour, they was amazing). Then to visit the Tears of Gold exhibition and reading the stories of those strong beautiful women broke my heart. It's really been a memorial visit for me, thank you. I was luckily enough to hear the choir rehearsing for the JS Bach's St Matthew's Passion performance tonight, they sound amazing 🙏🏻✝️🕊️ God bless you all 🙏🏻

Beautiful cathedral which is a must visit when in Coventry. Historical landmark with alot of history. The post WWII ruins are preserved along with the new buildings that house the museum. Wonderful views of a historical mega structure overlooking the modern university town centre of Coventry. Well worth a visit. 5 star landmark ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

A magnificent place packed with interest inside and out. I went with a photography group and took hundreds of images. Particularly eye catching were the many stained glass windows and the etched glass figures on the south window.. Free to enter with toilets and an excellent cafe at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum next door.
