Hola Amigos, who wants some Casera Mexicana? Home made Mexican food found in Scotland’s great city of Edinburgh. The El Cartel restaurant welcomes you to try their hot Tacos and then to cool you down try their famous frozen Margaritas. With your taste senses on overload they bring the Hip Hop vibe to the city centre making it one of the best restaurants in Edinburgh.

El Cartel’s take on authentic Mexican street food is influenced by their favourite taquerias, cantinas and street side carts to bring you a real taste of Mexico. The flavours are fresh and zesty and every dish is made to order from scratch.

Their tortillas, they are a real labour of love! They use traditional Masa Harina (corn flour) to make the dough balls which are then individually hand pressed. This is something they do every day, it may take a while but it is 100% worth it for that authentic taste. Even the hot sauce is made in house. It’s a fiery combination of 4 different chillies: ancho, morita, arbol and habanero which will leave your taste buds tingling!

For those who wish to quench their thirst they’ve got an extensive range of tequilas, mezcals and cocktails alongside the famous frozen margaritas. Don’f forget to ask about the day’s special flavours!

Excellent little Mexican restaurant with a great line in tasty tacos. The food is excellent and the range and quality of the tacos is varied and very well made. Lots of texture and flavours in each with a good range of spice as well. The small selection of specials is great as well, and the brisket quesadilla when we were there was excellent. Nice margaritas too! Service was prompt, friendly and unfussy. All in all well worth a visit when in town.

First time here and it was a lot smaller that I thought it would be but it was nice. It was a unique atmosphere with good music and vibes. Service was excellent and all staff were very friendly. It felt more authentic with a smaller menu and the food was served very quickly. I really like how the waitress gave suggestions on how many dishes we should order (2/3 per person). She also gave brilliant recommendations from the menu which I ultimately loved. My wife also enjoyed her dishes. All the food was delicious. We even got some hot sauces (free of charge) at the table. The portion sizes were spot on as we didn’t feel bursting full by the end of the meal which you often do at similar restaurants. The only negative I can think of was there wasn’t many non-alcoholic drinks available (not even lemonade). However, this could be because they are trying to be more authentic with traditional drinks only. We were ready for the bill within 30 mins so it’s an excellent option for a quick bite to eat. This being said, we didn’t feel rushed at any time.

Great food, great service. For the 4 of us we tried all the starters on the menu and got 4 types of tacos. Favourites: - corn on the cob: I don’t normally like corn very much, but this was juicy! I think they rolled it in sour cream then grated cheese then covered in paprika salt. Delicious. - pork confit taco: the meat was actually crispy, yum - baja cod taco: crispy batter, soft and juicy fish Paid £35 each, including 6 cocktails for the 4 people.

Was really excited to try this place as the reviews are mostly good and always looks busy when walking past. Found the food pretty bland. The steak in the quesadillas carnes was quite dry. Ordered a variety of tacos as well, the only one we liked were the duck tacos. The meat & pineapple garnish were better than the other ones. The staff were lovely and attentive. However, been to better in Edinburgh for Mexican food.

So the issue is that all the soft-shell tacos all ended up tasting the same, they're basically a different main ingredient, chicken, beef etc. and then they have the same sauce and garnish on them. The drinks however are amazing! Gluten free are options available! Staff are really lovely I gave 3star for atmosphere as the Deliveroo app kept going off and no one silenced it.
