With exhibitions from art galleries to prehistoric dinosaurs, the National Museum Cardiff will entertain adults and children alike.

World-class art

The art collection at National Museum Cardiff is one of Europe’s finest. You will see over five hundred years of magnificent paintings, drawings, sculpture, silver and ceramics from Wales and across the world, including one of Europe’s best collections of Impressionist art.

The Evolution of Wales

You can follow Wales’s journey as it travels across the face of the planet from its origins billions of years ago, with film, sound, light and spectacular specimens. Prepare for a 4,600 million-year voyage with meteorites, moon rock and fossils on a journey that brings you face to face with dinosaurs and woolly mammoths. Find out how life evolved in Wales and which dinosaurs roamed the land.

Natural history

Witness Wales’s diverse natural history on an expedition that begins at the seashore and ends in the mountains. Experience some of the unique environments that make Wales home to over 900 Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

Marvel at the enormous Basking Shark suspended above you. The largest fish around our coasts (up to 7.5m long and weighing in at 4 tonnes).

Even on dry land the Humpback Whale is a stunning sight. The 9m (29ft) skeleton of a young humpback was washed ashore near Barry in 1982.

And found stranded on a beach below Harlech Castle in 1988, witness the largest Leatherback Turtle ever recorded, this male specimen began life as a tiny 3 inch hatchling and is estimated to be over 100 years old. It won a place in the Guinness Book of Records at 916 kg, nearly 3m long and over 2.5m from flipper to flipper.

Amazing museum hands down! Very well maintained space and exhibits. The collection pieces are displayed logically and beautifully. The 1900 - contemporary ceramics collection itself is a great reason enough to visit the museum. So many other current exhibitions running when I was there and they are all great! Very inspiring for everyone visiting.

I had an unbelievable experience at the National Museum of Wales. Words don’t do justice—this is simply a place you must visit! The museum beautifully captures Welsh history, culture, and art. From the fascinating natural history displays and archaeological treasures to the world-class collection of Impressionist paintings, every section is filled with stories worth exploring. I especially enjoyed seeing highlights from Wales’ industrial past and the stunning art galleries featuring works by Monet, Renoir, and Van Gogh. Pros: Free entry (a huge plus!) Wide variety of exhibits (art, history, natural sciences) Great for families and all ages. Rich insight into Welsh heritage and culture. Friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere. If you’re in Wales, don’t miss it—it’s more than just a museum, it’s a journey through time.

What an experience! Two very contrasting parts - natural history and art. The museum is completely free and, very kindly stored my suitcase whilst visiting. Several staff members engaged to discuss the exhibits - I found out that T Rex hunted in packs AND made a noise akin to a turkey, not a roar! A great way to spend the afternoon (especially if you're a kid).

A nice location for you to visit with art and ceramics, natural history and so on. You will see the oldest elephant 🐘 skeleton and many good knowledge for Roman culture. Better for a weekend break if you see outside is rainy and need clean free toilets. Sometimes, they play good violin 🎻 and great classical music group🎶. Last time, I heard the Harry Potter song there 👌

Brilliant museum for a toddler. My daughter is 3 and loves the dinosaur and animal areas here. We’ve also done several of the activity’s like the scavenger hunts at Easter/Christmas and some crafts. In the holidays they open a room at the far right hand side of museum that has lots of interactive things for kids like gemstones, shells, fossils, magnifying glasses, microscope and some colouring and blocks to play with. The cafe is very overpriced for food and I would say you’d be better bringing a packed lunch or having food in Cardiff somewhere but perfect for a hot drink.
