Oxford’s much-loved Pitt Rivers Museum attraction is unlike any other. Founded in 1884, it houses within an atmospheric building more than 500,000 objects, photographs and manuscripts from all over the world, and from all periods of human existence. Within these are exceptional objects of ritual significance, and objects made for tourists or trade.

The Museum is loved by many and is widely regarded as one of the best days out of its kind. It is also a contested space that calls for innovative curation to engage with the more difficult aspects of its history; a place where many histories collide and where objects from Britain’s colonial past sit side by side with more recent (and much older) ones.

The Museum has consciously cultivated its characteristic layout: artefacts are arranged by type into a ‘democracy of things’, rather than by time or region. This reveals fascinating distinctions and parallels across cultures, and encourages questions about the ways in which humanity tackles problems, and creates, understands and embraces life across the world. The collections are of extraordinary range and depth, comprising objects of historical, social and ritual significance, a mixture of great works of art, technology, invention and design from around the world. The Museum is used for teaching learners of all ages and not just students at the University. Staff carry out world-leading conservation and research and are known for their innovative public programmes and collaborative work with both local communities and those from where the collections originate.

There is a popular perception that the Pitt Rivers Museum is a ‘museum of a museum’ but in fact none of the original displays still exist. The Museum has always adapted and changed over time, by updating displays, adding to the collections and consciously working to keep it relevant. Today, they continue to undertake this transformational work to ensure that the collections remain meaningful to contemporary audiences, whilst maintaining the multi-layered and dense displays, which have inspired, enthralled and intrigued many generations of visitors.

Absolutely fascinating collection. Take your time to go round. Activities for kids to keep them busy. Make sure you visit all floors. Small cafe on site. Limited parking! Free parking in Oxford on Sunday though! Eat your own lunch on lawn outside the musuem. Only two benches still. Staff are really helpful.

This is a fascinating museum. All of the exhibits are arranged according to function instead of age or location, so you can really see how humans have solved problems in similar ways irrespective of time or location. The Pitt Rivers is very different from the adjoining Natural History museum. The latter is bright and light, with lots of space between each exhibit, while the former is dark and close, with everything on top of each other, crammed into antique glass cabinets, like a child's idea of a museum. The staff at the Pitt Rivers were really friendly and obviously very well-informed. One chap gave us a tour of the museum, showing us the most interesting exhibits, including a spider whose silk is used by people from the Solomon islands for fishing. Honestly, I would recommend this particular museum for adults and children older than perhaps six. It was all a bit much for our son – although he did enjoy doing the mouse trail (wooden mice hidden within the cabinets throughout the museum), which helped his dad and I see a few more exhibits than we would have managed otherwise.

If you asked an eleven year old to design a museum, thus is what it would look like. Its a fantastically eclectic museum mercifully free of Right On exhibits. It has everything from dinosaurs to small arms. Well worth a visit.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon. The museum feels quite chaotic and cluttered and I struggled to read the displays without my glasses in the poor light. Not having the shrunken heads on display was disappointing and while I understand the reasons why I think it's a missed opportunity to teach my kids about other cultures and values and to have an actual discussion about these things. The interpretation board felt preachy and condescending. The kids enjoyed the mouse and water trails.
