  • Restaurant Restaurant

Swansea’s Beach House Oxwich restaurant is located in the beautiful stretch of the Gower Peninsula. Not many restaurants have  award winning standards, but with a Michelin Star and 3 AA Rosettes you’re sure to sit down for some of the best meals and arguably the best views in Swansea.

Perched high on the sand, just a stone’s throw from the water, Beach House feels as though it’s been washed ashore and weathered over time. Soaking in all of its natural setting, the essence of Beach House is firmly rooted in the Gower, from the rugged stone walls, through to the food on the plate. Nothing is taken for granted and everything is carefully considered.

The freshest local produce, whether reared, caught, picked or grown, is served through each season, as Beach House delivers a refined dining experience overlooking the iconic Oxwich Bay.

Head Chef Hywel Griffith opened the Beach House doors in 2016, bringing this old coal house on the shore of Oxwich Beach to life. Since opening, the restaurant has become a true food destination on the Gower.

Its rugged stone walls and beautiful interiors reflect its iconic coastal location backed by the giant dunes of Oxwich, the Cefyn Bryn ridge and Three Cliffs Bay.

Hywel’s food showcases the full flavour of the produce from across Wales and right here on the doorstep of the Gower.

The restaurant has won numerous awards for the quality of the food, including 3 AA Rosettes, and a coveted Michelin Star which it has held since 2020.

The staff were absolutely phenomenal, they treated me with kind and respect. I had planned to go with who is now my ex and the staff went above and beyond. The food was exceptional and I will be returning. The location is also beautiful with the sea and little boats to watch. Can't think of a better location for it."

We are local, but this was our first experience dining here. Had the 8 course and thoroughly enjoyed. Staff were lovely. Thanks for taking the time to make my wife’s taster menu milk free. It was all delicious, foods we wouldn’t necessarily have chosen ourselves but paired beautifully. We are fortunate to have a restaurant like this on our doorstep. The only annoying thing is that the estate still insist you pay for parking 🙄 but appreciate that this is likely out of your control. We will be back!

Superbly elegant and thoughtful dishes served in a beautiful beachside setting. Lots of fun or generous touches. There were many hits here — the lobster dish and the sea buckthorn ice cream will be particularly memorable — but all of it was good. This is worth travelling for and deserves its star this year.

We came here for a birthday celebration and both got the 8 course taster menu. We have been here before for the 8 course taster before and absolutely loved it, but it was much less busy and therefore service was last time was genuinely outstanding, timed to perfection, tables cleaned after every course, and were given time to ask questions and give feedback on the dishes. This time was much busier. The service was still great, but it lost a lot of charm due to how busy they were, often explaining the dishes and hurriedly walking off, not cleaning tables in between courses, and often not asking if we had enjoyed the previous dish. This was a bit disappointing as we knew how fantastic our experience was last time and it did lose the charm/touch. The dishes were really mixed- last time I enjoyed every course bar one. This time there were a few average courses and a few incredible dishes. The meal starts with some hors d’oeuvres and their really tasty lavarbread-bread rolls. Similarly to last time, the first course was a crab puree with lime flavouring- I didn’t like this dish last time and I really didn’t enjoy it this time either (before anyone says I could have had it replaced- dishes change all of the time and they do not provide an overview). The lobster dish was also not our favourite- the lobster itself was gorgeous, but was unfortunately on a quite bitty tart base and covered in a sauce which took away from the lobster flavour. We felt we would have enjoyed the lobster more if the lobster could speak for itself. The tomato dish was probably the most surprising dish of all- what a delight! This is what I feel the beach house brands itself on- making simple ingredients taste amazing. The freshness of the tomato and micro herbs were fantastic and presented beautifully. On to our favourite, and the best dish I have ever had at a restaurant, the lamb. It was absolutely unbelievable- melt in the mouth and was the star of the show. It was served with the crispy fatty piece of the lamp which was gorgeous. The sweetbread dish was spectacular- meaty, bite, fatty, really flavoursome. We both would have liked more meat dishes overall, but we understand it was seasonal and so we had more seafood than meat. The strawberry palate cleanser was very vibrant, fresh, and was a lovely cool and punchy addition. Paired with a pudding wine really transformed it, so we would definitely advise going with what the servers recommend and the sparkling pudding wine. The star of the show (besides the lamb) is the soufflé. We have not stopped speaking about this soufflé since we last came in May 2024. It is the best pudding we have had. Creamy, soft, cinnamony, and the cooling tea flavoured ice cream work so well. Same as last time, we went for the additional cheese board. While delicious, we were a bit disappointed that the cheeses largely had not changed despite the server saying they had, although we enjoyed it nonetheless. We shared a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon blanc, and a quart of Spanish red wine. As well as having two glasses of pudding wine each and two martinis. In addition to the service taking some of the charm away, we felt like the beach house really lost its touch when we realised we had been charged £4 a go for water- £8 in total for what was tap water (we didn’t ask for bottled)! We spent over £400 at this restaurant, including cocktails, and basically two bottles of wine, and were left with a bad taste in our mouth realising they had charged us for simply having water which they refilled when it got empty and then charged us for. This was very cheap and put a dampener on the meal as the elegant touch was lost. Overall, this is a fantastic place, but we have had a very good experience here and also a very okay experience. We likely won’t be coming here for the taster menu again and will move on to other restaurants for this, but we will come back to try their standard dinner/lunch service. When you dine at a Michelin star restaurant and pay a significant amount of money, you want to be blown away.

Disappointing Experience — Not Worthy of a Michelin Star! We visited this restaurant on a Saturday night and, unfortunately, had a very poor experience — one of the worst of our entire trip through Wales. Service was shockingly slow and inattentive. After being seated, it took over an hour before anyone came to take our menu preferences. From there, things only got worse. Throughout the evening, we had to get up from the table to find staff just to request basics like salt or drinks. It felt like we were constantly chasing service, which completely disrupted the experience. As for the food — sadly, it didn’t live up to its Michelin reputation. The bread and dessert were the highlights, but the main course (lamb) was underwhelming and quite bland. Overall, it simply didn’t feel like a Michelin-level meal, either in quality or in hospitality. We expected much more, especially given the rating and price point. Would not return or recommend based on this visit.
