The Palace of Holyroodhouse is located at the end of the Edinburgh Royal Mile. The Palace is open throughout the year, so book a tour to hear about past Royals that have stayed and find out about all the history that is within the walls of this famous attraction, it’ll be a great day out for all the family.

Explore the Palace’s close associations with some of Scotland’s most well-known historic figures such as Mary, Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie, and learn how today it is used by The King when carrying out official engagements in Scotland.

See a rare surviving painting by Artemisia Gentileschi, the greatest female artist of her generation, in a new temporary display at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

The rediscovered painting, Susanna and the Elders, sheds fresh light on Artemisia’s time in London in the late 1630s, working alongside her father at the court of Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria.

Shown alongside it is Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting, considered one of Artemisia’s greatest works. The two paintings form a new temporary display, taking their place in the ornate baroque interiors of the Palace.

The display is included as part of your visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

It was a beautiful to visit, super happy that I went. They give a free headset to listen to a guided tour without any extra cost, so interesting to hear about the different areas of the palace. The only thing that’s quite sad is that we can’t take pictures inside. But other than that highly recommend.

Palace of Holyroodhouse is a beautiful and majestic place located at the end of the Royal Mile. It’s one of Edinburgh’s most important historic landmarks, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into Scotland’s royal history. The palace features stunning architecture, elegant rooms, and lovely gardens that add to its charm. However, photography is not allowed in most of the rooms to protect the historic artifacts and furnishings. Despite that, the visit is truly worth it — the atmosphere, details, and royal elegance make it an unforgettable experience.

This was definitely worth a visit. Yes, it does cost to go in but the handset made it worthwhile as they had an interactive app that helped the kids to learn, search and play. Out of all the historic sites we went to, they learnt the most at this site. The palace was beautiful and well maintained. There was one area (tight staircase heading to Mary's room) that would be an issue to get to for those who struggle to walk upstairs. There was no signage to provide another route. Other than that, we had a fabulous time and my 3 kids aged from 7 to 14 all enjoyed it. All in all, a breathtaking

I really enjoyed exploring this palace and the audio guide included with the ticket was very informative to learn about Scottish history and the tour is well laid out. The great gallery room was very impressive!

The official residence in Scotland of the British monarchy, The Palace of Holyroodhouse, is a current palace residence, home to the Royal Family, specifically the Queen of England Royal Mile, the road which runs like a backbone through the middle of the city, connecting the two royal residences - Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Holyrood Palace, or The Palace of Holyroodhouse, is one of the “must-see” attractions in Edinburgh. Full of history and incredible displays of Royalty. It’s had a long and chequered history, but nowadays it is the official residence and offices of the Queen in Scotland. She spends about a week here every year, performing royal engagements. When she is not in residence, the palace is open to visitors. It’s really well worth a visit!
