The Collection

There are over 5000 items in the collection. Most of them were collected by the pharmacist Sir Henry Wellcome. Others came to us from: the British Museum; the Royal Edinburgh Museum; National Museums and Galleries of Wales Cardiff; the Royal Albert Museum and Art Gallery, Woking College and also private donors.

Sir Henry Wellcome collected items from excavations. Included in the Egypt Centre collection are items from Armant, Amarna, Deir el-Medina, Esna, Mostagedda, Qau, etc. Additionally he collected items from individuals. These included Robert de Rustafjaell, Gayer-Anderson, Berens, Cesnola, Rev. William Frankland Hood and the Rev. William MacGregor.

They have items from the British Isles, Cyprus, Rome, Greece, and of course Egypt!

Be sure to check the website ahead of time to see what events they have on during your visit, as they have events planned throughout the year.

A wonderful museum about ancient Egypt. The museum is on 2 floors l, but they are raising money to refurbish the lower floor. The video is display of a mummy bandage which after xrays turned out to be a snake. They have a lovely virtual display of the snake. The pottery with the dark top is around 5000 years old as is the translucent bowl. Amazing quality. Enjoy your visit

What an absolute hidden gem of a museum. If you take your time and read everything about the exhibits and speak to the experts to learn more then it’s well worth a visit which will last you a good few hours. Parking can be problematic because of location but we did find an empty disabled spot very close to it. It’s in the Taleisin theatre on site and is accessible with a lift to take you to the second floor of the exhibition. You can even hold real Egyptian artefacts. I’m giving this a 5* because it’s free, the exhibits are really amazing and well worth a half day out.

I've always been fascinated with this area of history and the Egypt Centre is amazing. There is so much information everywhere about all the objects in the collection. There was also an opportunity to handle and learn about a few items. I highly recommend visiting, and all the volunteers are very knowledgeable.

I visited the Egypt Centre with my granddaughter soon after it opened and returned last week with my great grandson, age seven. I was surprised that it had not seemed to change over the years. He had looked forward to the visit, but I do not know what he made of the collection. He had questions to answer on papers given to him on entering and the volunteers showed him a display concerning "Mumyfying" and a game. Nothing else was within his age group or was explained. No booklet was found or available on the subjects of: The Nile, Egyptians who left the objects on display, The Temples, There were booklets on Religions, Gods and some other subjects and in foreign languages. After looking at the website to plan the visit, i found it outdated and not of a standard associated with a major University. It held items written during the pandemic and not updated. Today, I found subjects which would have been helpful, but overlooked as I had not broken the code, which led to such discoveries. One day someone will return to the Egypt Centre and decide to bring it, along with the website and Utube page up to date. Until then it's a lost opportunity, but I am sure with great aims. They missed this target. Better luck elsewhere.
